Before I got started on my project I answered the following questions provided by the Fab Academy Rubric

 Questions
  1. What will I do?
  2. Who has done what beforehand?
  3. What materials and components will be required?
  4. Where will they come from?
  5. How much will it cost?
  6. What parts and systems will be made?
  7. What processes will be used?
  8. What tasks need to be completed?
  9. What questions need to be answered?
  10. What is the schedule?
  11. How will it be evaluated?
What will I do?

For my final project this year I am going to make a desk. I would like my desk to be able to move vertically up and down so that I can work at it while standing or while sitting. I would also like there to be plenty of room for my computer, electronics equipment, and various projects and tools.

Who has done what beforehand?

Thousand of people have made desks of every variety before me, but the inspiration for my project comes from Wendy, a member of the Wellington Fab Lab. She built a similar desk for her final project when she took Fab Academy. I have also built one desk during Fab Academy that can be found here.

What materials and components will be required?

Here is a general BOM (Bill of Materials) for my project.

Where will they come from?

For this desk I will try to aquire most of the materials locally. Those that I cannot find here in Alaska I will order on Amazon.

How much will it cost?

For my final project I am hoping to spend less than $500. If possible I would prefer to keep it as at around $200.

What parts and systems will be made?

There will be a number of parts/systems that I will need to make for my desk. They are as follows.

  1. Plywood frame for the desk.
  2. 3d printed brackedts for linear actuators.
  3. Electronics to control the screen and actuators.
  4. Electronics housing.
  5. Plastic desk surface.
What processes will be used?

For this project I will use the following processes.

  1. CNC milling.
  2. 3d printing.
  3. Programming.
  4. Laser cutting.
  5. PCB manufacturing.
  6. Maybe molding and casting.
What tasks need to be completed?

The following tasks need to be completed in order to finish my final project.

  1. Manufacturing the parts listed in the "What parts and systems will be made?" section.
  2. Assembling the physical desk.
  3. Soldering the electronics.
  4. Wiring the actuators.
  5. Sanding and staining/painting the desk.
What questions need to be answered?

Before I can complete this project I still need to figure out where to aquire the materials and how long it will take to finish the project.

What is the schedule?

Since I am going out of town before Fab Academy even ends I have a very tight schedule. I need to finish the final project in under a week.

How will it be evaluated?

My final project will be evaluated based on the 2016 Fab Academy rubric.
